Director: Iain Cunningham
Producer: Rebecca Mark-Lawson
Irene’s Ghost follows a son’s search to find out about the mother he never knew. Iain was 3 when his mother Irene died. His Dad never spoke about it, and the family silence around Irene meant that she was alive only in Iain’s imagination, as a thistle seed or in the image of the moon.
Later in life, the birth of his own child inspires a journey to discover the truth about Irene, piecing together fragments of the past to make sense of the present. Using animation mixed with filmed footage Irene’s Ghost movingly rebuilds a lost life.
Irene’s Ghost produced with Forward Features, co-producer’s Ciara Barry and Rosie Crerar of Barry Crerar, is the debut feature film from director Iain Cunningham. The film is supported by the BFI, Creative England, Creative Scotland, Wellcome and the Maudsley Charity.
